Why Take a Practice Test?
A Parent Snapshot

The ACT® still plays a meaningful role in college admissions. A practice test helps you decide what actually matters for your student — and what doesn’t.
Take a practice test to:

  • See if the ACT® or SAT® is the better fit for their strengths
  • Uncover weaknesses and blindspots early
  • Avoid wasting time or money on unnecessary prep
  • Replace admissions guesswork with real data and a plan

The bottom line: the sooner you take a practice test, the more stress-free the college testing process becomes.

ACT® Practice Test — Frequently Asked Questions

Top parent questions answered. More details are available below.

1) Is the ACT practice test really free?

Yes! There’s no cost or credit card required — it’s a free, no-pressure way for your student to experience the ACT® and gain real insight into their testing strengths.

2) What’s the difference between the paper and digital ACT practice test?

Both versions of our practice test cover the exact same content, timing, and scoring. The only difference is format: one is taken on paper, the other is taken online. The digital version also includes the official Desmos graphing calculator, just like the real exam, so students can practice using the same tools they’ll see on test day.

3) Can my student use a calculator?

Yes. On our digital ACT® practice, students can use the official Desmos calculator embedded in the test — exactly like the official digital exam. Students taking the paper-format practice may use an approved handheld calculator, following ACT® rules.

4) What are the recent changes with the ACT that I've heard about?

The ACT® introduced the Enhanced ACT — a shorter test launched digitally in April 2025 and on paper in September 2025. Scores remain on the 1–36 scale, but the Composite now reflects English, Math, and Reading; Science is optional and scored separately. Our practice tests reflect these updates.

5) What happened to the Science section for the ACT?

On the Enhanced ACT®, Science is optional. Students can take the core test (English, Math, Reading) or add Science for a separate score. The content and reasoning skills remain similar to the previous ACT® format. We offer practice with or without Science so you can choose the right path.

6) How long does the ACT practice test take?

Plan for about 3 hours, including short breaks. The test includes English, Math, Reading, and (optionally) Science — mirroring official conditions.

7) When will we get the results?

Scores are available right after the test, with a detailed breakdown by section plus insights into timing and accuracy.

Is the ACT still paper-based?

The ACT® now offers both paper and digital formats. Many U.S. test centers still administer the paper version, while digital testing is expanding nationwide through 2025–26. Our practice supports both formats so students can train for what they’ll likely see.

Does the ACT have an essay?

Yes. The optional ACT® Writing Test (essay) is still offered at select centers. If your student is considering Writing, let us know — we provide essay practice and scoring guidance.

8) Can an ACT® practice test be taken online through Revolution Prep?

Yes. We offer both digital and paper-format practice ACTs that mirror official conditions — including the Digital Enhanced version for students who will test online.

Is the practice test proctored like the real exam?

Yes. Every practice is live and proctored by an instructor who guides students through timing and instructions for a realistic test-day experience.

Who should take a practice ACT®?

Students in grades 10–12 who want to compare ACT® vs. SAT® fit, gauge college readiness, or build a targeted prep plan based on real performance data.

Do colleges prefer the SAT® or ACT®?

Colleges view both exams equally. The best strategy is to pick the test where your student can score higher and focus prep there — a practice exam helps reveal the better fit.

Will this affect my student’s college applications?

No. This is a private practice exam. Results are for your family only and are never shared with schools or colleges.

What happens after the test?

You’ll meet one-on-one with a Test Prep Advisor to review results, compare ACT®/SAT® fit, and map out a personalized plan — no obligation, just insight.

Can we reschedule if needed?

Yes. You can easily reschedule or pick another date using the link in your confirmation email.

Does the ACT® still matter for test-optional schools?

Yes. Even at test-optional schools, strong ACT® scores can boost merit-aid opportunities, offset a lower GPA, and strengthen applications at competitive universities.
